PREVENTING HEAT STRESS IS BETTER THAN TREATING HEAT STRESS.
Wildfires burn extremely hot.
Since wildfires are often located in remote and difficult terrain, traditional cooling technologies such as consumer grade ice cooling vests, fans, misters, and air conditioners are more of a logistical problem than a solution. All of them require electricity which is difficult to supply in many locations.
A more effective and practical solution for personal cooling before, during, and after a period of strenuous activity are PhaseCore salt-based, phase change, personal cooling elements that activate at 82.4o F and produce an average cooling effect of 720 F for three to four hours.
IMPROVE REHAB SOP
Many fire crews currently jury-rig cold water immersion solutions using pails or consumer grade ice chests. However only 1 or two firefighters can use these devices at a time and carrying enough filled ice chests to meet the needs on an entire fire crew over multiple days is a logistical nightmare.
A better implementation of cold water immersion (CWI) is to use a purpose-built device such as Immersion Cooling Equipment (ICE).

A better solution to mass evacuation is the AmbuBus. Using an AmbuBus conversion kit, any available bus or truck can be converted into a 12 or 18 patient medical bus in about two hours by two people, using only hand tools.
The AmbuBus Conversion Kit can serve as sleeping quarters or a firefighter rehab vehicle when not transporting patients. The kit can be installed in a shipping container and airlifted to a remote site if road access is not possible.
